The SILC Mission...

Our Mission is to strengthen the voice of Iowans with disabilities on issues affecting their lives, to build a statewide network of centers for independent living, and to collaborate
with our partners in advancing the independence, productivity, and full inclusion of Iowans with disabilities.

The Iowa SILC is anticipating two Council Member openings by July 1, 2012.  Per federal regulations, both of these positions must be filled by a person with a disability who does not work for a state agency or a Center for Independent Living.  We are inviting people with disabilities from across the state who are interested to apply to be considered for appointed to the SILC by the Governor.

We encourage people to apply who have a PASSION for working on independent living issues, and who are willing to volunteer their time to attend and participate in four quarterly Board Meetings as well as participate on at least one committee that meets via teleconference either monthly or every other month.

These are VOLUNTEER positions that are appointed by the Governor.

The Board has four quarterly meetings a year, three that are in-person in Des Moines and one that is a call-in teleconference:

September 6, 2012    SILC Board Meeting 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, Des Moines
December 6, 2012     SILC Board Annual Meeting 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, Des Moines
March 7, 2013           SILC Board Meeting TELECONFERENCE 10:00 am to 2:00 pm
May 2, 2013               SILC Board Meeting 10:00 am to 3:00 om, Des Moines

For those Board Members who live more than an hour from Des Moines, the SILC can provide a hotel room the night before the meeting, and the SILC will reimburse for mileage and a meal to travel to Des Moines the day before the Board Meeting.  Free breakfast is provided at the hotel.  For all Board Members, the SILC will reimburse for mileage to attend the meeting,  provide lunch at the Board Meeting, and provide assistance with the salary, meal, and hotel for a Personal Assistant (PA) if one is needed.

All SILC Board Meetings are accessible, and Board Members will be provided with accessible documents and interpreters as needed and requested.
